A Little Daisy and Its Life's Purpose
The Perspective of a Little Intelligent Daisy.
Once upon a time, there was a little wild but brilliant daisy in a large meadow. The meadow was beautiful, vast and full of wide varieties of flora and fauna. The daisy stood on a raised land that allowed her to see the entire meadow and beyond.
The little daisy was a great thinker and wanted to know everything, but most importantly, she wanted to know her purpose and the true meaning of her life. She believed that she would only be happy if she could find out the answer to these crucial questions.
One day, while she was looking at the far edges of the meadow, she thought about the purpose of the universe. After some serious thought and deliberation, she realised that she would probably never know the answer. But she didn’t feel frustrated. She said to herself: “that’s ok, not knowing the reason for the existence of the universe is not going to make any difference to my happiness, and I am happy that the universe and I exist.”
Soon after, her mind went back to the same topic, but this time, she thought about the meaning of life in general. What is life? What is the purpose of being alive? After some serious thought and deliberation, she realised that she would probably never know the answer. But she didn’t feel frustrated. She said to herself: “not knowing the purpose of life is not going to make any difference to my happiness, but I am happy that I am alive and the meadow is alive. It feels good to be alive.”
After a while, her mind went back to the same topic. This time, she thought about the purpose of all the things she could see around her - things that she was very familiar with in her patch. After some serious thought and deliberation, she realised that she would probably never know the answer. But she didn’t feel frustrated. She said to herself: “anyway, not knowing the purpose of all things around me or why they are the way they are, is not going to make any difference to my happiness, but I am happy that they are here. They make the meadow a pleasant place.”
This final chain of thoughts took her mind to a different angle. She thought about the positive role some of the things around her had in the loveliness of the meadow, and particularly in her pleasure and well-being. At the same time, she became aware of the things that seemingly did not have a positive role in that environment. She was even mindful of the things that were destructive and harmful as far as she knew.
Again, it wasn’t easy to know why. But after some serious thought and deliberation, she glowed with enlightenment and happiness. She said to herself: “I may not know what the purpose of my life is in the meadow, but given a choice, I would like to have a positive role in the loveliness of the meadow and in the life of everything around me in every possible way.”
She chose her own purpose, her own role. She chose happiness and loveliness for herself and everything else in the meadow. And, she was happy for the rest of her short life in the meadow.
After all, while she was there, the meadow was a little more beautiful, a little more pleasant, and a tad lovelier, just because of her.
I love daisies.
